Long Island baseball team helps environment through Operation Save New York
Long Island, New York, Oct. 11

Long Island’s Atlantic League baseball team, the Long Island Ducks, has enrolled their home field, Citibank Park, in Operation Save New York, a demand response program administered by Energy Curtailment Specialists, Inc. (ECS).
ECS, headquartered in Buffalo, New York, will pay the Long Island Ducks for their best efforts in reducing electricity when the grid is forecasted to be unstable.  As part of the program, the Ducks will receive day-ahead notice in order to prepare for the following day’s event.
The Long Island Ducks entered the Atlantic League eight years ago and claimed the championship title in 2004.  This year, they have made play-offs for their fourth consecutive season.
As their season comes to an end, the Long Island Ducks prepare their park for the possibility of an event that could be called at anytime.  If they are asked to curtail on a day that there are no events planned at the park, then they can use emergency lighting, shut off all 117, two thousand Watt bulb lights that brighten up the park, and even shut down their clubhouses.
“Since we are large electricity users when Citibank Park is in use, there is a lot that we can do to participate in this program,” said Russ Blatt, Operations Manager of Citibank Park.  “We are lucky because we have a lot of flexibility when it comes to shutting down since there are only a limited number of scheduled off-season events for the park.”
Even though there are a number of events that occur year round at Citibank Park, including the 72 home games that the Ducks play, the park, which seats 6000, was still able to partake in a test event last winter.  They were able to shut off the upstairs portion of the park, clubhouses, use emergency lighting, and transfer load to their generator.
“With their eager participation, Citibank Park is an ideal member and we are pleased to work with their organization,” said Glen Smith, president, chief executive officer, and co-founder of ECS.
