Marriott Hotels Join Demand Response Program
Buffalo, New York, Oct. 30

Twenty Marriott Hotels in New York State have enrolled in Operation Save New York, a demand response program administered by Energy Curtailment Specialists, Inc., headquartered in Buffalo, New York.  Participants in this program receive payments in return for agreeing to reduce their load when the electric grid is overloaded and in trouble.  This program helps prevent blackouts and rolling brownouts along with eliminating the need to build new power plants.
The hotels, located in New York City, Long Island, and Syracuse, will each develop their own customized plan that will maximize demand reduction while minimizing any impact on their guests.  Some curtailment efforts that may be included in their plans include turning down public area and office lights, reducing cooling in unused areas, running emergency generators, and turning off non-critical equipment.
“Joining ECS’ demand response program is part of Marriott’s campaign to reduce environmental impact of our hotels and adopt more sustainable energy initiatives,” said Dennis Moran, director of energy for Marriott International’s eastern region.  “Participating in this program reduces our operating costs and helps all electricity consumers in New York.”
Members of Operation Save New York are usually large energy users who receive notice the day prior to an event, allowing them time to devise a plan and prepare for the curtailment effort.
“We are very excited to welcome Marriott, such a prestigious hospitality establishment and a pinnacle of their industry, in our program,” said Glen Smith, president, chief executive officer, and co-founder of ECS.  “Their enrollment shows that they are genuinely concerned about the environment and their community.”
